Ahmedabad: Gujarat has clinched the top spot among all Indian states in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) for July 2025, according to an official government release citing the scheme’s latest monthly rankings.
Of the 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) spread across 18 states and one Union Territory, Gujarat is home to five: Kathodi, Kotwalia, Padhar, Siddi, and Kolgha. The PM-JANMAN mission, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2023, aims to drive holistic development for these communities by delivering critical infrastructure and essential services within set timelines.
As of July, Gujarat has approved the construction of 12,489 houses under the scheme and cleared 17 road projects. Impressively, all 2,803 identified PVTG households previously lacking piped water supply have now been connected. The state has also brought electricity to 5,200 PVTG households under the mission. Additionally, 37 mobile towers have been installed so far, with work underway on another 34 towers to boost connectivity in remote tribal areas.
In health and education, the state has deployed 22 mobile medical units, planned 67 new Anganwadis for maternal and child welfare, and approved 13 hostels to support tribal students. Economic development is also in focus, with 21 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras sanctioned to help PVTG communities process and sell forest products, and 39 multipurpose centers approved for vocational training, nutrition, adult education, and cultural activities.
To raise awareness, Gujarat launched an extensive Information, Education, Communication (IEC) campaign across tribal regions.
This campaign included setting up 920 PM-JANMAN selfie points, creating 473 wall paintings, placing 1,446 hoardings, and distributing over 32,000 pamphlets. These efforts led to significant on-the-ground outcomes: issuance of over 23,000 Aadhaar cards, opening of 12,229 Jan Dhan bank accounts, and distribution of more than 1 lakh Ayushman Bharat health cards to tribal beneficiaries.
