Renovation Work at Amreli’s Rajmahal Palace 65% Complete

Amreli: Rajmahal Palace in the heart of Amreli is undergoing renovations at a cost of around ₹25 crore. The reconstruction project, launched in September last year, has seen 65% of the work completed so far.

Once the restoration is complete, Gujarat Tourism Corporation Ltd. plans to convert the palace into a heritage hotel and museum, ensuring its permanent upkeep and offering visitors from Amreli and abroad a captivating glimpse into Gujarat’s regal past.

The “Conservation and Development of Rajmahal” project includes:

  • Dry-cleaning of the palace’s interior and exterior
  • Waterproofing of the roof
  • Strengthening the structure using limestone
  • Repair work with Ziki plaster
  • Nighttime decorative lighting
  • Development of a wooden roof, parking facilities, and garden area
  • Conversion into a heritage hotel

Sauvik Ghosh, involved in the restoration, said, “Prime Minister Modi has linked heritage with development, viewing heritage as a source of inspiration and a new dimension for tourism. We are taking special care to preserve the palace’s original grandeur from decades ago.”

Built in 1892 during the reign of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad of Vadodara, the Rajmahal once hosted the Lok Darbar. After independence, it served as the District Services Office (Collector’s Office). The bronze statue of Maharaja Sayajirao still stands in the courtyard, a reminder of the palace’s historical significance.

With its restoration, this iconic palace, symbolic of the Gaekwadi era, is poised to regain its former splendor and become a key heritage destination in Gujarat.
