With increase in route, Ahmedabad Metro sees ridership soar to 1.5 lakh daily passengers

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad- Gandhinagar Metro Rail service has witnessed a significant rise in daily ridership, climbing from an average of 35,000 passengers in 2019 to around 1.5 lakh in 2025. Maintaining an impressive 99.84% on-time record, over 10.38 crore citizens have used the metro so far, an official press release stated.
The Ahmedabad Metro Rail project was approved in November 2014. The first 6.5-km stretch from Vastral Village to Apparel Park began operations in March 2019. In 2022, the 32-km line connecting the north-south and east-west corridors of the city was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. The second phase introduced a 28.2-km route linking Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad. The segment from Motera to Sector-1 and GIFT City started in September 2024, and the stretch up to the Secretariat began operations in April 2025. Soon, the full Ahmedabad-to-Mahatma Mandir route will be operational, covering 68 km with 54 stations.
Metro fares remain affordable, ranging from Rs 5 to Rs 40, with an average of Re 1 per km.
“The metro represents inclusive development, featuring ramps, lifts, tactile flooring, and accessible travel for differently-abled passengers. Safety is ensured through advanced technologies such as the Communication-Based Train Control system, fire alarms, surveillance cameras, and tunnel ventilation,” the state government said in a release marking Vikas Saptah.
