Valsad: A large-scale Kher (Khair) wood smuggling operation has been busted in South Gujarat’s forest areas, threatening the survival of the species. Chikhli and Vansda talukas of Navsari district have emerged as hotspots for this illegal activity, prompting strict action by authorities.

In a major breakthrough, the police recently arrested 19 individuals involved in stealing Kher wood from Dang and Valsad districts. Investigations indicate that the operation could be part of a larger interstate smuggling network.

The racket came to light when a truck carrying Kher wood was intercepted in Maharashtra. Following this, the Valsad North Forest Department seized a significant quantity of Kher bark from Rumla village in Chikhli taluka. Officials revealed that illegally felled Kher trees from various forest areas in South Gujarat were being transported to Maharashtra.

A case has been registered, and investigations are ongoing in both Gujarat and Maharashtra. However, questions have emerged about how the wood crossed three district borders of Dang, Navsari, and Valsad, before reaching Maharashtra. Authorities have indicated that the number of accused could rise above 50 as the probe continues.

The investigation revealed the lucrative nature of the trade, with market prices ranging between ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 per tonne. The arrested individuals have claimed that some consignments were sold for as high as ₹60,000 per tonne. DeshGujarat
