Gujarat govt expands Sant Surdas scheme to benefit persons with over 60% disability
December 02, 2025
Ahmedabad: In a significant move for the welfare of persons with disabilities, the Gujarat government has decided that from the financial year 2025-26, individuals with more than 60% disability will also be eligible for benefits under the Sant Surdas Scheme. Previously, the scheme was limited to those with over 80% disability.
As per an official statement, over the past five years, more than four lakh persons with disabilities in the state have received over Rs 820 crore in assistance through various welfare schemes. In a major change, the requirement of a BPL card for purchasing electric two-wheelers has been removed, allowing persons with disabilities to buy a vehicle of their choice.
As per an official statement, the state government is committed to enhancing the social and economic empowerment of persons with disabilities. Under government initiatives, special ID cards have been issued, enabling free travel on ST buses within and outside the state, with the pass now valid for a lifetime.
The state has implemented a wide range of welfare measures, including:
-
Free ST bus travel for persons with disabilities and their aides, particularly for conditions like Parkinson’s, Hemophilia, Muscular Dystrophy, Thalassemia, and chronic neurological disorders.
-
Monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 for individuals with over 40% disability in conditions such as Muscular Dystrophy, Thalassemia, and chronic neurological disorders.
-
Provision of motorized tricycles and joystick wheelchairs.
-
Lifetime validity for disability certificates, removing the need for repeated medical check-ups.
December 3, observed as International Day of Persons with Disabilities, serves as a reminder of the government’s ongoing efforts to integrate persons with disabilities into the mainstream and improve public awareness about their rights and contributions, the press release said. DeshGujarat
