Gujarat HC Pulls Up Vadodara Collector for Skipping Hearing, Empty Chair Sparks Contempt Row

Ahmedabad: In a contempt case related to land non-agricultural (NA) permission, the Gujarat High Court on Friday came down heavily on Vadodara District Collector Anil Dhamelia, the Revenue Secretary and other government authorities over non-compliance with court orders.

Despite a specific direction from the court to appear via video conferencing, the collector failed to join the proceedings at the scheduled time. During the hearing, only an empty chair was visible on screen, prompting sharp criticism from the bench.

A division bench of Justices Bhargava D. Karia and L.S. Pirzada took serious note of the absence and questioned the conduct of the authorities. The court observed that disregard for judicial orders undermines the dignity of the institution and cannot be tolerated.

Expressing strong displeasure, the bench remarked, “What do government officials think? Why did the collector not appear despite a High Court order? What message is sought to be conveyed by showing an empty chair?”

The court warned of strict action, including the possibility of issuing a bailable warrant against the collector. It further observed that the non-appearance amounted to prima facie contempt of court and asked why charges should not be framed.
