Roads Connecting Akshardham and Mahatma Mandir to Undergo Rs 50 Crore Urban Revamp
May 26, 2026
Gandhinagar: The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) has revived its long-pending plan to redevelop Roads No. 6 and 7 connecting Akshardham and Mahatma Mandir, issuing a fresh Rs 49.97 crore tender to transform the key corridor into a multi-use urban street equipped with modern infrastructure and smart mobility features.
The project, which had remained stalled for nearly six to seven years despite earlier tenders being floated, is being taken up once again after previous efforts failed to reach completion. The civic body has now renewed efforts to complete the redevelopment under an Urban Street Development model aimed at modernising one of the city’s important traffic corridors.
The move gained momentum after Gandhinagar North MLA Ritaben Patel wrote to the Municipal Commissioner, urging authorities either to complete the pending work or issue a fresh tender for the project.
Smart infrastructure and mobility upgrades planned
Under the redevelopment plan, both roads will be upgraded with dedicated cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. The project includes 1.5-metre-wide cycle tracks on both sides, smart paver-block footpaths, underground cable ducts, stormwater drainage systems, decorative lighting and landscaping features.
Officials said the project is designed not merely as a road-widening initiative but as a complete streetscape transformation. Urban plazas, street furniture, landscaping elements and public utility features will be incorporated to improve aesthetics and usability.
A 1-metre-wide centre median will also be developed along the route, while newly designed paved shoulders will be added to improve road safety and increase usable width.
Heavy-duty road design for long-term durability
Considering the heavy vehicular movement on the corridor, GMC has proposed a multi-layer road structure aimed at ensuring long-term durability. The project includes two layers each of 125-mm Granular Sub Base (GSB) and Water Bound Macadam (WBM), followed by Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) and Bituminous Concrete (BC) layers.
The design also includes a 150-mm trimix concrete base and strengthened road shoulders to withstand heavy traffic movement for years.
Authorities said underground cable ducts measuring 0.73 metres will reduce the need for future road excavation, while RCC pipelines and stormwater chambers will improve rainwater drainage systems.
The project has been given a completion timeline of 15 months, and bids have been invited from agencies with prior experience in urban streetscape projects, cycle-track development and related infrastructure works. DeshGujarat
