What is common between Narendra Modi and Obama?
There can be multiple answers.
But one of the common things between two is their direct to people addresses on Youtube.
President Obama started addressing his people directly through videos on Youtube early this year. Before this, President’s weekly addresses were broadcast only on radio.
In ‘Your weekly addresses’ section of Youtube’s ‘Whitehouse’ channel, Obama regularly releases his weekly address in video.
One can watch President Obama delivering his weekly address from his office, his house and even from his airplane.
But now it seems, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is on similar (if not same) path to reach whatever amount of people he can. In last one week, Modi has released two video messages on Youtube channel ‘Vande Gujarat.’
On March, 25 Narendra Modi criticized Congress party’s manifesto through his video statement on Youtube. Modi had already released a press note criticizing Congress party’s manifesto early in the evening but then he also released a video statement on Youtube. Modi released the statement in Hindi to reach nationwide audience.
On April, 4 Modi released another video, directly on Youthbe, this time for NRI community. Modi urged NRI people to contribute their best in India’s elections by generating opinion via email, post and telephone to support the cause of decisive government and strong leader.
It is well known that President Obama uses teleprompter while talking on camera, but Narendra Modi talks on camera without using teleprompter. He talks from his heart and through his mind without using written script and that too without any retake.
Though Modi and Obama both have adopted similar idea, there are some differences too.
President Obama publishes his online video address every week, but Narendra Modi delivers his video address only some time. Obama deliverers his speech with show of his body language, but Modi uses only leap language and sit tightly on camera. President Obama uses different backgrounds to show his power but Narendra Modi’s videos have simple and similar or same background. President Obama speaks like a video blog, but Mr. Modi remains serious while talking on Youtube.
Broadband internet penetration in India is very poor compare to the United States but Modi’s direct addresses easily get more than 2000 views over a time. Obama’s least watched direct address(February 27, 2009) was viewed 42,690 times.
Narendra Modi is first and only Youtube friendly politician in India. He uses technology amazingly and aggressively. His many speeches are available online but direct address is one step ahead. Narendra Modi’s Youtube videos are viewed and commented more than any other politician in India.
Great thing about Modi on Youtube is that, he is there unedited. This is great according to me because, Modi has blamed once and again that the Indian media usually takes one part of his speech according to their agenda and highlight it, but conceals the other part which is more important but less sensational.
