Lohum to Revive HCL Copper Facility in Gujarat Under 20-Year Revenue-Sharing Deal

Bharuch: Lohum, a company engaged in the production of sustainable critical minerals and advanced materials, announced on Thursday that it has acquired the rights to revive, modernise and operate Hindustan Copper Ltd’s (HCL) 50,000-tonne-per-year copper facility at Jhagadia in Gujarat under a 20-year revenue-sharing agreement.

According to the company, the agreement, which includes an option for a five-year extension, is expected to boost India’s copper refining capacity at a time when demand is rising rapidly from sectors such as power, electric vehicles, electronics and infrastructure.

“The redevelopment of the Jhagadia plant will support the expansion of domestic copper production by leveraging existing industrial assets,” said Rajat Verma, Founder and CEO of Lohum.

The company stated that, following the upgrade, the facility will produce Grade-A copper cathodes with a purity of 99.9997 per cent, catering to a wide range of industrial and manufacturing applications.

The move comes as India seeks to reduce its dependence on imported copper and strengthen the supply of critical minerals required for clean energy initiatives and advanced manufacturing industries.

Lohum noted that domestic copper consumption surpassed 1.87 million tonnes in FY25 and continues to grow at an annual rate of more than 9 per cent, driven by investments in renewable energy, electric mobility, power transmission networks and digital infrastructure.

The project is also aligned with the Centre’s National Critical Mineral Mission and broader efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities and secure critical mineral supply chains. DeshGujarat
