“Enforce stringent censorship on cinema to prevent crime against women”

Ahmedabad, 29 December 2012

Condoling the unfortunate death of a Delhi gang rape victim, Rajya Sabha MP Shri Parimal Nathwani demanded stringent censorship on Cinema to prevent crime against women. Shri Nathwani’s statement in this regard is presented here:

The death of a Delhi gang rape victim is unfortunate for the family and the entire nation. The country wide demonstrations spontaneously erupted against the ghastly, cruel and gruesome incident reflected the anger of the whole Indian society. The incident has brought the shame to the country.

This is not a lone incident and women are subjected to all kinds of crimes including rapes, gang-apes, rape of minors, molestation, sexual harassment and eve-teasing throughout the country. In no circumstances, the society can tolerate such things, particularly when we as Indians never give up an opportunity to boast about our great cultural, spiritual and religious richness. It is also advisable for women to be extra careful for guarding their own dignity before the sex-maniac males.

There is an urgent need to relook at censoring of the films. Its laws also need review threadbare. The way in which sex and crime projected as an integral part of our cinema media certainly has an adverse influence on sinful minds who are tempted to venture into such crimes. I firmly believe that the way in which the scenes of sex, violence and crime are being portrayed in films certainly influence adversely on illiterate and timid lots. The souls with criminal mindsets get inspired with such scenes and commit crimes in the process of assuming themselves as the real filmy character.

While the strict punishment for crime against women is imperative to set deterrents in the system, at the same time stringent scrutiny of the sex, violence and crime related aspects in our cinema is also the need of an hours. The ‘spectators want it and that is why we show it’ kind of arguments are just rubbish and hold no ground. Also, to tell that films show what happens in the society is also untrue. What is needed is complete overhaul and restructuring of the censorship systems and laws; and re-organize it keeping broad societal interests in view.

I condole the unfortunate death of a young girl in a very painful circumstances due to the horrifying act inflicted upon her by the lucifers of the society. I express my heartfelt sympathy for the bereaved family.
