The Gujarat government has sounded a precautionary alert in the wake of the extremely heavy rainfall warning of the Met department in many parts of the state in the coming three days even as medium to heavy rain lashed almost all the southern and central parts of the state today.
Director of the Ahmedabad met center, Mr. Jayanta Sarkar today said that most parts of the south and central Gujarat and some northern parts experienced ‘good’ rains today. ‘The whole of the Gujarat region (north and south) would see heavy to extremely heavy rain from tonight till September 21. It will spread to Saurashtra as well. The revival of the monsoon is caused by a deep depression moving towards Gujarat. It was first formed in the bay of Bengal near coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.’
Meanwhile wide spread rain have been reported from various parts of the state including Surat, Tapi, Valsad, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Kheda, Sabarkhanta, Mahesana and Aravalli. At many place over five inches of rain has been reported. The state flood control office data reported rains in 110 talukas of 19 districts till 1800 hrs today.
Keeping in mind the large scale damage of life and property during the last two spells of monsoon this year; first in Amreli and adjoining areas of Saurashtra in June and then in Banaskantha and neighbouring districts of northern Gujarat, the state government has sounded a precautionary alert for preparations to meet any eventuality. In Saurashtra over 70 people and 10 Asiatic lions died during the rains while large scale devastation of life and property also took place in north Gujarat in the second spell of extremely heavy rains.
‘The government was contemplating to cancel the leaves of the personnel of the concerned departments to keep them on stand by. The government is keeping a close eye on the situation,’ highly placed official sources said today.
