Dog sterilization fails: 1.6 Lakh Amdavadis bitten by stray dogs in 3 years

Amdavad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) paid four agencies a total of Rs 8.46 crore to sterilize 91,718 dogs over the last three financial years. However, during this time, 1.6 lakh Amdavadis have been bitten by stray dogs.

Despite spending crores on dog sterilization, the number of strays and dog bites in the city remains high.

The number of people bitten by dogs in the last three years has always been more than 50,000. In 2020, the number of dog bite cases was 51,244, which fell to 50,688 in 2021, only to rise again to 58,125 in 2022. The highest number of dog bites in the last decade was recorded in 2019 when 65,881 cases were registered.

Over the past three years, 91,718 dogs were sterilized, and between 2012 and 2019, around 2 lakh dogs were sterilized. The civic body had claimed in 2010 that there were 2.1 lakh strays in the city requiring neutering. However, even after spending crores on neutering about 3 lakh dogs, the number of dogs in need of neutering continues to increase.

With 6,248 complaints received by the CNCD department of the AMC in 2022-23, compared to 4,406 in 2020-21, there has been a significant increase in complaints about dog cruelty.

The AMC has engaged four organizations to sterilize dogs, and they have been given space in the Danilimda and Behrampura areas of the city. The AMC pays Rs 976.50 to sterilize each dog. DeshGujarat
