All 112 SDPO/ACP offices in Gujarat to have Forensic Crime Scene Managers
December 21, 2024
Gandhinagar: Bharatiya Nyay Samhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Samhita, and Bharatiya Evidence Act have been implemented across the country from 1st July 2024. These three new laws have made provision for maximum use of forensic science in the investigation process, with special emphasis on collecting scientific evidence. Keeping this in mind, the Gujarat government has taken an important decision to appoint ‘Forensic Crime Scene Managers’ in all 112 SDPO (Sub Divisional Police Officer)/ACP (Assistant Police Commissioner) offices of the state.
State Police Chief Shri Vikas Sahay has said that this initiative taken jointly by Gujarat Police and the Directorate of Forensic Science is very important and its results will definitely be visible in the future. For the past few years, various steps have been taken to increase the conviction rate in Gujarat and the Conviction Rate Improvement Project is currently underway. As part of the same effort, it has been decided to appoint a ‘Crime Scene Manager’ in the offices of all SDPOs/ACPs.
The responsibility of supervising the investigation of all types of serious crimes committed in the state lies with the SDPOs in the districts and the ACPs in the cities. As a senior police officer, when the SDPO/ACP supervises a serious crime, he visits the crime scene and provides guidance to the investigating officer to collect scientific evidence. In order to properly discharge this responsibility, a system has been put in place to assist him with a forensic crime scene manager who is an expert and trained in forensic science.
Experts from the Directorate of Forensic Science have planned to provide special training to all these 112 ‘Forensic Crime Scene Managers’ at the Forensic Science Labs in Gandhinagar, Surat and Rajkot. In which various crime scene related topics including crime scene management, importance of physical evidence and chain of custody, crime scene investigation process, guidelines for special types of samples, use of e-evidence and digital evidence will be covered.
