Surat gets new City Bus Terminal; To ease traffic congestion near railway station

Surat: The Minister of State for Home, Transport, and Youth Affairs, Harsh Sanghavi, today inaugurated the new city bus terminal for the BRTS and city bus services run by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) in a 5000 sq. meter area next to the Central ST Bus Station of Surat. Since the railway station development work (multi-modal transport hub) by SITCO at Surat Railway Station is in progress, a new city bus terminal has been made operational next to the GSRTC Central Bus Station as an alternative to the existing city bus terminal to ease heavy traffic around the railway station and central bus station.

This new city bus terminal will provide relief to Surat residents from traffic congestion, as the city buses that previously operated from the bus depot near Surat Railway Station will now be shifted to this newly opened facility.

After inaugurating the new bus terminal, Sanghavi stated that Surat is the fastest-growing city in India. Due to the movement of thousands of passengers at the bustling Surat Railway Station, ST Bus Station, and City Bus Station, traffic congestion remains a challenge. The new city bus terminal, located on district panchayat land, will help reduce traffic around the railway station premises and save time and fuel for citizens.

Sanghavi told the media, “Surat Municipal Corporation, Surat Police, and the District Panchayat have joined forces to resolve traffic congestion near the railway station. The city buses that previously stood near the railway station, causing traffic issues, will now be shifted to the newly built terminal on 5,000 square meters of land owned by the District Panchayat. As a result, the road outside the railway station will be free from traffic, making life easier for citizens.”

It is noteworthy that the BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) was launched in Surat in 2014 and the city bus service in 2016. Together, they provide transport facilities across 58 routes with 875 buses. The Citylink bus service from the railway station terminal operates continuously from 4:00 AM to 12:00 AM, with 4500 trips being made daily on 26 routes by 353 buses. This means approximately four buses are plying every minute, serving around 20,000 passengers daily. Passengers enjoy fast, smooth, and comfortable travel through the bus services. DeshGujarat
