August 09, 2025
Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced plans to set up two “sponge parks” in the city’s western zone to tackle urban flooding and boost groundwater levels. The parks will come up in Bodakdev and Vejalpur wards, with a combined estimated investment of ₹2.2 crore.
Approved by the Water Supply and Sewerage Committee, the project will feature dedicated detention tank zones and earthen tank beds to capture and store rainwater at both locations, said Committee Chairman Dilip Bagaria.
In Bodakdev, an earthen tank bed will be built on a plot near Ashok Vatika at a cost of ₹73.48 lakh, while in Vejalpur, a similar facility will be developed near the Torrent Power Substation for ₹1.49 crore.
The sponge parks are designed to serve two purposes , collecting and storing rainwater during the monsoon, and enhancing the recreational appeal of open spaces in the dry season. Both will incorporate sustainable drainage systems, landscaped gardens, cycling tracks, children’s play areas, and other public amenities. DeshGujarat
