Mob thrashes Nehru Nagar hit-and-run accused outside court in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Brief chaos erupted outside the Metro Court in the city today when Rohan Soni, the driver accused in the fatal Brezza crash near Nehrunagar’s Rani Jhansi BRTS bus stand, was brought in for a custody hearing. An angry mob attacked the accused as soon as he was taken out of the police van. Officers had to rush him inside the court building to protect him from the crowd. Later, the court granted police two days’ remand of the accused.

Two men, Akram Qureshi (22) and Ashfaq Ajmeri (33), lost their lives early Monday after a speeding car, allegedly driven by Rohan Soni (20), rammed into their scooter near the Jhansi Ki Rani BRTS bus stand. Soni, a third-year BBA student from Maninagar, struck the scooter from behind with such force that it hurled the riders onto the BRTS corridor, where they hit an iron fence before landing on the road. Akram died on the spot, while Ashfaq succumbed to multiple injuries during treatment at Sola Civil Hospital.

Eyewitnesses claimed Soni was driving at excessive speed. He allegedly abandoned the damaged vehicle in a nearby lane and fled but was later arrested based on witness statements, CCTV footage, and vehicle registration records. The FIR was lodged by Ashfaq’s uncle, Faheemhusen Gulamnabi Ajmeri.

Police said Soni’s father is a bullion trader in Manek Chowk and his mother a homemaker. CCTV footage confirmed rash driving, and records revealed his history of traffic offences, including over-speeding, using tinted windows, and driving without documents.

Soni has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence and under the Motor Vehicles Act for rash driving. Police are also probing claims that he was returning from a birthday party and may have been racing prior to the accident. The seized car has been sent for forensic examination. DeshGujarat
