AMC to install rainwater harvesting systems in 1,230 municipal buildings
November 18, 2025
Ahmedabad: In a major push to conserve water and recharge groundwater, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will install rainwater harvesting systems in 1,230 municipal premises across the city, including zonal offices, ward offices, municipal schools, hospitals, libraries, and other civic buildings, under the “Catch the Rain” campaign.
The AMC’s Water Supply and Maintenance Committee has approved a tender worth Rs. 23.63 crore (plus GST) for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the systems for five years. The initiative aims to prevent rainwater wastage by collecting it from rooftops and directing it to recharge the ground, thereby raising the groundwater level.
The Chairman of the Water Supply Committee said that the project would equip most AMC buildings with rooftop systems to capture and store rainwater in corporation-owned water tanks. The collected water can then be used for municipal purposes, reducing dependency on external water sources and supporting sustainable water management.
The project covers a wide range of properties, including zone offices, ward offices, hospitals, municipal schools, urban health centers, libraries, water distribution stations, and drainage pumping stations, ensuring that rainwater harvesting becomes a key part of AMC’s water conservation strategy citywide.
