Ahmedabad civic body seals Vivekanand College

Ahmedabad: In its ongoing drive against properties operating without BU permission and fire safety compliance, the Estate Department of the Central Zone of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has sealed Vivekanand College in the Raipur area. The college, found to be operating two floors without permission and lacking mandatory fire safety measures, was also flagged as a dilapidated structure. Students arriving for classes this morning were forced to return as the building remains sealed.

AMC’s citywide drive continues today, with food courts, schools and colleges identified for action. This follows similar operations across Ahmedabad, where properties attracting large public footfall are being shut for violations. After carrying out similar action against schools and hospitals last week, the corporation has now moved against food courts.

On December 11, six food courts located along SG Highway, Ring Road, Hebatpur and Gota were sealed by the Estate Department of the North West Zone for lacking BU permission and fire safety clearance. Officials note that most of these structures are temporary wooden setups or shed-based constructions with no approved building plans.

Following the Rajkot tragedy, the state government orders strict enforcement of BU and fire safety norms. Despite being given time to regularise permissions, many establishments fail to comply, prompting AMC to issue notices and seal non-compliant buildings. DeshGujarat
