TMC Leader Abhishek Banerjee Booked Over ‘Gujarati Gang’ Remark in X Post

Ahmedabad: A complaint was lodged against Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee at the Bhowanipore police station earlier this week over a past social media post in which he allegedly referred to the Gujarati community as a “gang.” Acting on the complaint, police registered an FIR late on Wednesday night.

In his complaint, Bhowanipore resident Arnab Kanti Das alleged that Abhishek, as a sitting Member of Parliament sworn to uphold the Constitution and the unity of the country, had used the term “gang” to describe Gujaratis, a word commonly associated with criminality and the underworld.

The complaint cites an X post made by Abhishek on May 2, in which he wrote: “Ten lifetimes won’t be enough for your Bangla Birodhi Gujarati gang and their stooge Gyanesh Kumar to put even a dent in my Diamond Harbour Model…”

Das argued that the Gujarati community is known for being law-abiding, industrious, and peace-loving, and has made significant contributions to the economic development of West Bengal and the country. He urged police to take cognisance of the matter, alleging that the remark could incite hostility or political violence against Gujaratis.

The complaint further noted that Abhishek’s post challenged the “Union of India” to visit the Falta Assembly constituency, which falls under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat he represents, and attempt to disrupt what he described as the Diamond Harbour Model.

According to Das, political disagreements should remain confined to the political sphere. However, he alleged that targeting a constitutional authority appointed by the President of India and issuing a challenge to the State crossed that line, amounting to rhetoric that could be interpreted as defiance of the Constitution and the nation.
