I was away from Gujarat since ’07. I was shocked when I was back and came to know the amount of liquor consumption in Gujarat. Earlier too, liquor was consumed freely in the state, very privately though. Liquor consumption has increased too many folds since then, that too in an open way. What conclusion should we draw from this? Does Gujarati culture have become more open? Does it imply that middle class values in an average Gujarati family have changed? Many of us would have had advocated our state policy which prohibits the sale and consumption of liquor, in any form in the state while discussing this with a non Gujarati friend. We felt prided then. It is extremely difficult to convince any one now. This is a matter of shame for every Gujarati. Liquor prohibition in the state is now merely a symbolic gesture. Law has become entirely useless as alcohol is freely available across the state. It was strange for me to make out that most of my non Gujarati friend’s had never touched alcohol although there is no prohibition in their respective states and has no strong views against liquor consumption. We are wise enough to make out the pros and cons! Aren’t we? I would like to take this opportunity to make a humble request to all fellow Gujarati’s to think over it. Jay Hind, Jay Gujarat.

I’ve never had alcohol nor do I encourage it at all. However it can be a major source of revenue and so we should consider allowing it.

In addition illegal liquor production is very dangerous to the consumer. It’s better to break up any underground production by legalizing it in my opinion. My concern is people drinking and driving, that cannot be tolerated. There should be harsh punishment for that sort of thing. But if people want to drink within the confines of their home or in a party hall, and are responsible about it I don’t have any issues.

There should be campaigns to educate people about the harms of alcohol starting at the youth level (Same for cigarettes and other harmful substances).
