CBI Chief gets 4-month extension, thanks to Sohrabuddin
New Delhi, 6 August, 2010

In view of high profile Sohrabuddin encounter case, CBI director Ashwani Kumar, whose term as CBI director was to end on last Monday, has got an extension for four months. The 1973-batch IPS officer will continue in the post till his retirement on November 30 this year. Kumar is personally monitoring the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case in which former Gujarat minister Amit Shah has been arrested.
According to report published in national daily, the CBI had been informed of the decision by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). They said the government move came in the backdrop of the Central investigating agency pursuing “some sensitive cases under his leadership”.
Kumar had been appointed to the post on August 2, 2008 after its previous director Vijay Shankar retired. He had joined the agency at a time when the CBI was facing a lot of criticism for its shoddy investigation in the sensational Arushi-Hemraj murder case of Noida. Kumar recently announced the formation of a new team to investigate the case.
