Gujarat govt condemns centre for interfering through NIA

Gandhinagar, 5 October, 2011

Gujarat government today criticized the central government for sending National Investigation Agency(NIA) team to Gujarat to review suspended controversial cop Sanjiv Bhatt and his family’s security.

Gujarat government spokesperson and Health minister Shri Jaynarayan Vyas told media that first the centre instructs the state government to provide security to Bhatt and just on the next day we see direct interference of centre into the state affair through NIA activity. Vyas said this is one more step taken by the centre in direction of harming the federal structure.

Vyas said it is state’s responsibility to provide security to its citizen as per the federal structure. He said Gujarat’s track record in providing security to its citizens is better than many Congress ruled states.

It should be mentioned here that Suspended cop Sanjiv Bhatt has been arrested in a criminal case and he is presently in Sabarmati jail in judicial custody. His wife had written a letter to central home minister Chidambaram stating that her family and her husband need security and she has no faith on the state government in this regard. In reaction to this, the centre is reportedly sending NIA and IB teams for independent assessment of Bhatt’s security.
