Decision on restoration of mobile data services likely today

Ahmedabad

The uncertainty over the restoration of mobile internet service in Gujarat, which has been suspended since the mid-night of August 25 when statewide violence erupted following the brief detention of the leaders of Patadar Anamat Aandolan Samiti (PAAS), is still on.

The move was initiated to check the rumour mongers on the social media and other misuse of the internet by anti social elements during the state wide protest by the supporters of PAAS, which is demanding the other backward classes (OBC) status for the politically strong Patel or Patidar community in the state. The two day violence claimed 10 lives. Over two hundred vehicles were also burnt.

While the official sources said that a high powered government committee has asked for district-wise report to assess the possibility of re-start of the services, the Commissioner of Police of Ahmedabad Mr, Shivanand Jha told UNI that a decision in this regard would be taken by this evening, He, however, did not elaborate whether the services would be started after that or the ban would be elongated.

Meanwhile, due to the suspended mobile internet services, the common man, professionals and the business community were equally suffering. However, sources said that the home department and the government was not willing to take any chances in this regard. ‘The situation is still volatile and the government want to be doubly re-assured about any step it takes with regard to the restoration of the services,’ the sources said.
