Gujarat high court today turned down the regular bail plea of jailed self styled godman Narayan Sai, son of Asaram Bapu who was also behind bars in a rape case involving a minor, in a bribery case and directed the police to expedite the inquiry against him.
The single bench court of Justice A J Desai accepted the prosecution’s argument that Sai might tamper with the evidence if granted bail. When the court said that it was not inclined to grant bail, Sai’s counsel C G Gupta took back the bail plea.
Gupta had earlier argued thatin the bribery case punishable for five years Sai had already spent around two years in the jail.
The Court however ordered the police toomplete inquiry against him in six months.
The bribery case is related to the alleged attempt of Sai to weaken the cases against him and his father by paying money to police, court people and others concerned. A police officer was nabbed in this connection with a large sum of money. Sai is lodged in Lajpore central jail in Surat since his arrest in December 2013 while Asaram is in Jodhpur jail since September that year. A lady had alleged that Sai had raped her repeatedly and sexually assaulted her between 2002 and 2005 when she was living at his Surat ashram,. He sister had made similar allegations against his father.
