The Scientist and head of the department of Biotechnology of Junagadh Agriculture University (JAU), Dr B A Golakia, under whose guidance a significant research of finding traces of gold ions in urine of Gir cows (cows of Gir area of Saurashtra in Gujarat) has been accomplished, today said that the gold in the cow urine was more of medicinal value and it would be foolish to try to extract it for commercial purposes.
He also said that his team was conducting researches on the medicinal properties of cow dung and panchgavya prepared with cow produces.
Dr. Golakia’s team has found 3 to 10 milligram of gold in ion form per liter of the Gir cow urine after four years of rigorous research. In addition to gold ions it has also found 388 compounds of high medicinal value in the Gir cow urine. Interestingly similar research on the urine of camel, sheep, buffalo and goat did not find them to be containing any antibiotic compounds like Gir cow urine.
Mr. Golakia today said that the gold in the cow urine was ‘bio gold’ ie gold from a living source which was more beneficial in medicinal uses than the gold bhasm etc. Its commercial extraction don’t look like a wise option. From one liter of urine one can get gold worth Rs 3o to 100 while the urine can itself be promoted and sold at anywhere between Rs 150 to 300 a liter. With the research of gold ion and various medically useful compounds in cow urine, the day won’t be far when the urine would sell at a much much higher price than milk if proper awareness is done. The research can open new avenues for the use of cow urine in treatment of various ailments.
‘Now we are working on dung and panchgavya. Initial research suggests anti fungal and anti microbial properties in it also,’ he said.
Mr. Golakia said that such research on other breeds of cows across the country should also be conducted.
‘Our research won’t make cow a gold extraction source but make people aware of its high medicinal value and apart from milk its other produces would also be used for nutrition and medicinal reasons,’ he said.
To a query regarding patent of his research, he said that as per the instructions of the authorities his team would go for intellectual property rights or patent of the discovery according to the laid down procedure.
