August 11, 2016
Gandhinagar: Two-day monsoon session of Gujarat Assembly is likely to meet on 22-23 August. Gujarat assembly is likely to clear mega reform Goods and Services Tax or GST in this session. The Lok Sabha passed the bill and the centre, which has set itself a tough deadline of April 1 next year for implementation of GST, will now try to send it soonest to India’s 29 states, at least 15, or half, of which must approve it. The centre has said it expects 16 states to clear GST in the next 30 days. The BJP governs nine states on its own and four along with allies and these states are expected to call special sittings of their assemblies to clear GST. Assam has already done it.
The assembly session this month will take place soon after party’s national president Amit Shah’s visit to Ahmedabad/Gandhinagar on Raksha Bandhan(August 18). Shah is likely to stay in Ahmedabad for three days. He is likely to felicitate new Gujarat BJP president Jitu Vaghani in a function. He may discuss possible names for the post of Speaker and Deputy Speaker. Both posts are vacant at present. Senior BJP MLA and former minister Parbatbhai Patel has been given responsibility of the post of Speaker temporarily at present. If Shah approves the names of new Speaker and Deputy Speaker, election for these posts may also happen during the two-day brief assembly session.
