September 02, 2017
Ahmedabad: Even as the recent spell of heavy rain ended yesterday, owing to local conditions moderate spell of downpour lashed Ahmedabad city this evening.
Though there was some confusion regarding rain data as the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC) figures showed that the city had seen around 45 mm of rain till 6pm, the AMC control room here put the average figure for the city till 7 pm at 11.98mm only with the highest 23 mm in New West zone.
According to SEOC a total of 84 talukas had witnessed rain till 6pm and Ahmedabad city was at the top with 45 mm while Lathi in Amreli had seen 25mm, Deodar in Banskantha 22mm, Suigam and Wav 17mm each. Most of the talukas got single digit light rain or drizzles. Parts of Rajkot, Morbi, Surendranagar, Botad, Patan and Mahesana also saw around half an inch of rain.
According to AMC control, however, the Ahmedabad city had got only 11.98mm of average rain till 7 pm. East zone had 5.87mm, West zone 13.26, New West zone 23mm, Central zone 7.25mm, North zone 14.33 mm and southe zone 8.25. An official of the control room claimed that the figures issued by SEOC with regard to Ahmedabad city were not correct. He said that they provide the data to them and owing to some confusion they had inflated the rain figures for the city. They have been conveyed about it. He said that none of the underpasses in the city has been closed owing to rain till 8 pm. Three gates of Vasna barrage were opened by 3 ft each and the water level in Sabarmati was 133 meter (danger mark 137 m) at 7 pm.
On the other hand more light to moderate rain has been predicted for Ahmedabad tonight even as the local met center director Jayanta Sarkar said that the rain was not owing to any system and was a local monsoon phenomenon.
‘Right now there is no system over Gujarat. The rain in Ahmedabad and some other places was owing to the moist South Westerly wind and local conditions which was common thing for monsoon period. There will be more spells of such light to moderate rain at isolated places in coming days,’ he said.
