Migrant workers clash with police in Surat
May 04, 2020
Surat: A few hundred migrant workers mainly belonging to Uttar Pradesh clashed with police in Palsana area of Surat today, around noon. Police had to lob tear gas shells to control the mob on rampage. Few workers involved in violence have been rounded up and detained. Police has controlled the situation for now.
According to a police official present there, ‘the migrants want to return to their native places in Uttar Pradesh. They argue that while Shramik Express trains have been operated from Surat to Odisha, why not for Uttar Pradesh yet. They also complain that their own community leaders collected money for their journey to native states but the journey has not materialized. They have nothing against government or police but they want to go home.’
Violent mobs of migrant labourers damaged vehicles and also caused injuries to some police men.
Yesterday over hundred labourers had gathered in Rajkot demanding that they want to go back to their native states.
