Endangered baby whale rescued off Gujarat coast

Olpad: A 20-foot baby whale, which got trapped in the mud at Mor village here during Sunday afternoon’s high tide, was successfully returned to the sea after an extensive rescue operation.

Around 2 p.m. on that Sunday afternoon, during the high tide, a live young whale measuring approximately 20 feet washed ashore and became stuck in the mud. Jigarbhai, a resident of Mor village, mentioned that a fellow villager named Sagar, who was returning to Dario Khedi, noticed the whale. He promptly alerted both villagers and authorities, setting the stage for the rescue efforts.

The forest department and local residents promptly launched rescue operations. They dug a pit and filled it with seawater to assist the whale. Fishing nets, ropes, and equipment like JCB were used to carry out the rescue. The operation continued well into the late night hours, and eventually, the whale was successfully rescued and released back into the sea.

Sachin Gupta, an official from the forest department, stated that they were informed of the incident on the previous Sunday evening and immediately dispatched a team to the scene. Efforts were made to return this young whale back to seawater. The whale weighed approximately 2 tons and measured 20 to 25 feet in length. DeshGujarat
