PIL against Haryanvi song ‘Court me goli’ in Gujarat HC
October 12, 2023
Ahmedabad: A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed on Wednesday against a Haryanvi song titled “Court me goli.” The plea demanded that the song be removed from YouTube, as it “challenged the integrity of the justice system.”
The bench, presided over by Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha Mayee, expressed a desire to review the song and its lyrics before making a decision. The case has been postponed for further hearing on October 19.
The PIL was submitted by Umakant Chauhan, with his lawyer, Jayant Sharma, contending that the video and portrayal in the song were objectionable. The video depicts a criminal shooting a witness in the presence of a judge in a courtroom, directly undermining the integrity of the Indian judicial system and insinuating that criminals operate above the law.
When the judges requested the lyrics of the song, advocate Sharma pointed out a particular line: “Bhari court mein goli maarenge meri jaan mkha judge ke bhi aavenge pasine dekhiye,” which translates to “I will shoot in a packed courtroom, my love, and you will see even the judge sweat.” The video indeed presents this scenario. The song features Ankit Balyan as a gangster and Fiza Chaudhary as a lawyer, with lyrics by Rahul Puthi and vocals by Puthi and Anshu Twinkle. It was released in December 2022 by Vats Records.
