Tender issued for construction of Rubber Barrage on Sabarmati River

Ahmedabad: Connecting the western and eastern parts of the city, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will construct a dual-purpose bridge and rubber barrage linking Acher near Torrent Powerhouse on the west bank of the Sabarmati River, and Sadar Bazar on the east bank of the river. With a budget of Rs 73.65 crore, the tender for construction of rubber barrage the has been issued.

The bridge is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, providing a crucial link between key areas such as Chandkheda, Sabarmati, Motera, Hansol, and the airport. Additionally, there is a proposal to include footpaths on both sides of the bridge and establish connections to the Riverfront from four different directions.

Beyond its transportation benefits, the barrage will serve as a water reservoir, capable of supplying uninterrupted water for 12-15 days.

This structure will incorporate an air-filled rubber barrage system, anticipated to attract international expertise due to its specialized construction requirements.

The system will be equipped with electro-mechanical automation for operation and maintenance, enabling the barrage to be inflated or deflated in response to the water level of the Sabarmati River. When inflated, the dam will raise the water level upstream, effectively controlling the water flow.

Furthermore, the AMC is exploring the integration of thematic lighting and water transportation to enhance the bridge’s functionality and visual appeal. Municipal Commissioner M. Thennarasan has emphasized the consideration of alternative proposals to ensure the optimal design and functionality of the barrage. DeshGujarat
