Gandhinagar: Gujarat is set to witness a major railway infrastructure development as an allocation of ₹17,155 crore has been made for the state in this year’s Union Budget.
Sharing the details on Monday, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “There has been a record allocation for Gujarat, with ₹17,155 crore allocated. Work in Gujarat is progressing at a very rapid pace. Since 2014, the state has added around 2,700 km of new railway tracks, which is more than the entire railway network of a country like Denmark. A total of 87 stations in the state are being redeveloped alongside key infrastructure projects.”
The allocation of ₹17,155 crore in this year’s budget marks a nearly 2,900% increase from the ₹589 crore annual average allocation between 2009 and 2014.
Ahmedabad, the biggest beneficiary, has invested ₹2,379 crore in station redevelopment. The existing south station building has been demolished, with foundation work underway for the new multi-modal transit hub (MMTH). Construction of a new parcel building is also in progress. Other stations under renovation include Gandhinagar Capital, Sabarmati, Surat, Somnath, Udhna, and New Bhuj.
