Gujarat Govt Declares Electricity-Related Employment as Essential Service

Gandhinagar: In a move aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power supply to the public, the Government of Gujarat has declared all employment in industries related to the generation, transmission, distribution, and trading of electricity as an essential service. This decision comes in light of concerns that any strike in these sectors could severely disrupt public utility services and inflict considerable hardship on the community.

The declaration was made through the Gujarat Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1972, citing the potential impact on public well-being, with particular emphasis on the critical nature of electricity supply for the smooth functioning of daily life. According to the government, a strike in the electricity sector could result in grave hardships for the community, affecting vital services that are essential to public safety and daily operations.

In its official statement, the government invoked the powers granted under sub-clause (ii) of clause (a) of sub-section (1) of Section 2 of the Gujarat Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1972 (Guj. 23 of 1972), to declare the employment in these industries as an essential service. This declaration is effective for six months, starting from March 14, 2025.

The move is expected to ensure the smooth operation of essential services, preventing disruptions in electricity supply that could lead to widespread inconvenience for residents and businesses across the state. The government aims to maintain stability in the power sector and protect the life and well-being of the community by minimizing the risk of power-related disruptions.

As per the declaration, the workers involved in the generation, transmission, distribution, and trading of electricity, as well as those participating in coordination activities related to these services, will now be legally bound to continue their duties without interruption. DeshGujarat
