Surat: A Shaheed Smarak (martyrs’ memorial) is coming up in the Vesu area of the city, which will showcase the valor and sacrifice of India’s soldiers. Spread across 59,416 square meters, the memorial is being developed in three phases and will feature a 34-meter-high Shaheed Stambh as its centerpiece.
The memorial is being built behind the Siddhi Vinayak Temple in Draft TP-29 (Vesu-Rundh-Magdalla) at an estimated cost of ₹51.64 crore under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme. Designed to inspire citizens, particularly the youth, the project will highlight the contributions of freedom fighters, soldiers, and ordinary citizens through display galleries, models, weapons, and war relics. A 16-meter-high Shaurya Dwar, Unity Square, and a replica of the Ashok Chakra at the entrance will add to the grandeur of the memorial. The complex will also include an amphitheatre, cultural performance platforms, and an organic pond to harvest rainwater.
According to officials, the first phase of the project, covering 30,677 square meters at a cost of ₹23.93 crore, is nearing completion. The second phase, spread over 28,739 square meters, will cost ₹11.95 crore, while the third phase will include static and dynamic display works. With these features, the memorial aims to become a symbol of valor, sacrifice, and patriotism, serving as an enduring tribute to India’s martyrs.
