Gujarat govt orders 2 pharma companies to stop production, recall toxic cough syrups
October 08, 2025
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government has ordered Shape Pharma (Surendranagar) and Rednex Pharmaceuticals (Ahmedabad) to immediately halt production of cough syrups after some batches were found to be “not of standard quality” (NSQ) and recall all such syrups from the market.
The Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) has collected 14 samples — three from Shape Pharma and 11 from Rednex, for testing, following a joint inspection with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) from October 3 to 5. The inspections were conducted after 17 children in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district reportedly died due to suspected renal failure linked to toxic cough syrup.
Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said strict inspections are underway across Gujarat’s 624 licensed oral liquid manufacturers, and an immediate ban has been imposed on the sale and distribution of NSQ syrups. DeshGujarat
