Viral Video Shows Asiatic Lion Being Chased by Car; Gujarat Forest Dept Orders Probe

Amreli: A disturbing video allegedly showing an Asiatic lion being chased and harassed by occupants of a car in Amreli district has gone viral on social media, triggering outrage among wildlife lovers and prompting the Forest Department to launch an investigation.

The viral footage reportedly shows a group of people recklessly pursuing the lion in a vehicle in a revenue area, forcing the frightened animal to run in an apparent attempt to escape. The video also allegedly shows one of the occupants throwing an object towards the lion, further scaring the animal.

Taking serious note of the incident, Vikas Yadav, the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) of Dhari Gir East, has ordered an immediate and detailed investigation into the matter.

To identify and apprehend those involved, Ram Ratan Nala has constituted a special investigation team comprising one Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) and three Range Forest Officers (RFOs) from Una, Khambha Mobile Code, Task Junagadh and Gir Gadhada divisions.

Forest officials stated that such acts amount to serious offences under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

“The Asiatic lion is the pride of Saurashtra and the nation. As a Schedule I protected animal, any act involving harassment of lions is a serious criminal offence under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. A dedicated team has been formed to conduct a detailed investigation, and strict action will be taken against anyone found involved,” Yadav said.

He further said that cyber investigation support may also be required to trace those responsible for uploading and circulating such videos online.

“The cyber cell can help identify who uploaded and circulated such videos on social media. The Forest Department also requires training and support in cyber investigation, as such videos are increasingly being shared online,” he added.

The investigation team is currently working to identify the individuals seen in the video and determine the exact location of the incident. Officials said a final report is expected soon, following which legal action will be initiated against those responsible.

Amreli district is known for having one of the highest populations of Asiatic lions in the state. However, incidents involving harassment and reckless behaviour towards lions by tourists and locals have reportedly increased in recent years.

Wildlife enthusiasts and local residents have demanded strict and exemplary punishment against the accused, warning that repeated harassment could pose a threat to the safety and well-being of the lions. DeshGujarat
