Adhik Mahino 2026: Purushottam Maas to Begin from May 17
May 03, 2026
Surat: Devotees will have extended opportunities for religious observances this year as an additional lunar month, known as Purushottam (Adhik) Maas, falls between May 17 and June 15 during the Hindu month of Jyestha.
Astrologer Govindji said that 2026 is considered significant in the Hindu calendar, as the Jyestha month spans 59 days, from May 2 to June 29, due to the inclusion of the extra month. This results in a total of 13 months in the year instead of the usual 12.
According to traditional calculations, an additional month is inserted to balance the difference between the solar year (approximately 365 days) and the lunar year (approximately 354 days). The gap of about 11 days each year accumulates over time, and when it reaches around 33 days—roughly every 32 to 36 months—an extra month is added to realign the calendar.
Religiously, Purushottam Maas is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is considered highly auspicious for spiritual practices such as prayer, chanting, penance, and charity. However, auspicious ceremonies like marriages, engagements, housewarming functions, naming ceremonies, and the start of new businesses are generally avoided during this period.
Experts also highlight the scientific basis of the extra month, noting that the adjustment reflects a precise astronomical calculation to maintain harmony between solar and lunar cycles. The system is regarded as a unique and accurate feature of the traditional Indian calendar.
During this period, devotees are advised to follow a disciplined lifestyle, including abstaining from non-vegetarian food, alcohol, onion and garlic, and overly spicy food. Practices such as avoiding daytime sleep and conserving water are also encouraged as part of spiritual discipline.
Several important festivals fall during this period, including Ganga Dussehra, Nirjala Ekadashi, Vat Savitri Vrat, and Shani Jayanti. Special worship of Hanumanji, particularly on Tuesdays, is also observed. According to belief, Lord Hanuman first met Lord Ram during this time, adding to its religious significance. DeshGujarat
