No Relief from Heat in Gujarat; Ahmedabad Hottest as Mercury Touches 43.7°C
May 21, 2026
Ahmedabad: The city once again emerged as Gujarat’s hottest on Wednesday, registering a scorching 43.7°C, which was 1.7 degrees above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The city topped the temperature charts across the state, narrowly ahead of Amreli (43.1°C) and Rajkot (43°C), both of which also recorded temperatures around 2 degrees above normal. Gandhinagar was not far behind at 42.3°C, while Deesa recorded 41.4°C and Bhuj touched 40.8°C.
The extreme heat is expected to continue, with the weather department forecasting another sweltering day on Thursday, as temperatures are likely to touch 44°C under mostly clear skies. Intense afternoon heat, dry winds, and a sharp drop in humidity levels are making conditions increasingly uncomfortable.
So, if you’re heading out for work, running errands, commuting during the afternoon, or spending long hours outdoors, precautions are becoming essential. Experts advise wearing light cotton clothing, staying hydrated, and minimizing direct exposure to the sun as the city continues to endure intense heat conditions.
According to the IMD, humidity levels that stood at 62% in the morning dropped sharply to 18% by evening, creating hot and dehydrating weather conditions across the city. Similar dry conditions were recorded across interior regions, with Amreli and Rajkot also reporting low evening humidity levels of 21%, highlighting the widespread intensity of the heat. The minimum temperature in Ahmedabad was recorded at 28.3°C.
Meanwhile, coastal areas experienced comparatively milder temperatures due to higher humidity. Surat recorded 34.8°C, Porbandar 35°C, Dwarka 33.1°C, and Veraval 33.8°C, though humidity levels in these regions remained significantly high.
Weather officials said dry conditions are expected to continue across Gujarat over the next week, with no major relief likely in the immediate future. DeshGujarat
