High Yarn Prices Push 600 Surat Weavers to 2-Day Weekly Shutdown
August 22, 2026
Surat: Frustrated by soaring yarn and raw material prices and inadequate market rates, around 600 yarn weavers in the Un area of the city have decided to shut their units for two days a week to minimise mounting losses.
The decision has been taken as rising yarn costs have pushed up production expenses, while weavers are unable to secure remunerative prices in the market. Weaver leader Zahid Kapadia said that if the situation does not improve, weavers may consider operating their units in only one shift a day.
The shutdown will be observed by nine industrial societies, including Damanwala Industrial Society, PM Damanwala Industrial Society, Taslimnagar Industrial Society, Raj Industrial Society, Sara Industrial Society, Gujarat Industrial Society, Mit & Mir Industrial Society, Old Wool Industrial Society and Nawab Industrial Society.
Meanwhile, other major powerloom clusters in Surat, including Pandesara, Sachin, Laskana, Katargam and Anjani, are also considering production cuts or shutting units for two to three days a week in response to the sharp rise in yarn prices.
Weavers have warned that unless yarn prices are brought under control immediately, production across Surat’s textile hub could witness a significant decline, further affecting the industry and its workforce. DeshGujarat
