Gujarat govt starts email helpline for students in Australia

The state of Gujarat in India has started online helpline through email for the students of the state studying in Australia and their parents in Gujarat.
Parents and students can email and convey their say to the government on security/racial attack related issues in Australia.
According to the state government release, the information will be gathered by the Non resident Gujarati department of the government of Gujarat from the helpline every hour and it will be sent to the government of India for necessary action.

YOUNG Indian students have been systematically targeted for muggings and petty crime by gangs of Middle Eastern youths not because of their race but for their personal belongings and proclivity for travelling alone at night.
That’s according to a Middle Eastern( Muslim Arab) Australian from Sydney’s Parramatta who is deeply familiar with the youth gang culture in the area.
“The Indians are saying it’s racially motivated, but it’s not,” said Kappa, 18, who did not want his surname published.
“It’s only because they’re easy targets, man, pure and simple, it’s got nothing to do with the colour of their skin. They walk around at night alone. They have mobile phones. They have iPods. They’ve often got cash in their wallets, man, and they like to wear jewellery.
“They don’t report it to the cops. Especially the students. They’re worried about their visas. Or they think the cops won’t do anything. And they’re right, man. The cops are losing control of the streets, man.”
The attacks on Indians had been occurring with increasing frequency over the past 12 to 18 months, said Kappa, as the number of students had grown at the University of Western Sydney. “It’s been getting a lot worse recently, probably because there are a lot more students — and opportunities — around,” he said. “And some of the Middle Eastern guys are out of work.”
Male Indian students were targeted because of their slight builds and meek natures, Kappa said. “It started because the Indian students didn’t fight back, man. They’re nice people, soft people, but they didn’t fight back, man. That made the (Middle Eastern) boys assume they were weak. Now they’re fighting back and showing us what they believe in, and I respect them for that.”
Kappa is quick to differentiate between those of Lebanese and Middle Eastern extraction. “They’re not Lebanese gangs, man, they’re gangs from the whole Middle Eastern region, some with parents from there, but born in Australia. Only some of the gang members are Lebanese, man. The Indian guys don’t form gangs.”
Young Indian women are never targeted, according to Kappa. “They only go after the guys, and the attacks aren’t usually that heavy, man. Just a few scratches and bruises. Some of them (the Middle Eastern guys) are addicted to the adrenalin — they do it for the quick grab — but they don’t want to hurt these people, not seriously.”
Railway stations in the Parramatta area — Harris Park, Westmead, Rosehill — have become the mugging hot spots, Kappa said. “There’s no one around at night, nearby streets are dark, and they (young Indian males) are usually on their own.” The (Middle Eastern) guys park in an adjoining street so their number plates can’t be seen or caught on video.”
Kappa admits to joining a well-known street gang when he was only 14 (“because all my friends were members”), being involved with several incidents of petty crime, and graduating to more serious organised crime before giving it all away more than a year ago.
“I was shot at, stabbed, and beaten man, and then I realised I wasn’t going to make it if things went on like this,” he said. “I really regret what I did now.”
Muslim community leader Fadi Rahman doubts whether the recent attacks in Sydney’s west have been racially motivated. “It’s much more likely to be a group of young thugs muscling their way around the area,” he said.
“But it’s about time we put up our hands and said, ‘yes, we do have a problem in our community and we need to deal with it’.”

PROTESTS in the wake of attacks on international students have forced a national quality crackdown on education and training providers to shore up the reputation of Australia’s $15.5 billion education export industry.
Education Minister Julia Gillard also announced another taskforce as it ratchets up its response to the attacks that have attracted international news coverage and sparked street protests.
The Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs in Hobart today agreed to urgently carry out targeted audits of education and training providers.
It follows Victoria’s earlier move to launch a “rapid audit” of providers suspected to being in breach of regulations.
The crackdown is expected to largely target those small private education providers that have been the target of complaints from students.
About two-thirds of the 97,035 Indian students in Australia last year were enrolled at private providers.
Ms Gillard also announced the creation of a telephone hotline for students to anonymously raise concerns that will be collated and published on a website, http://www.studyinaustralia.gov.au. The hotline number is 1300 363 079.
“Ministers have joined together to unreservedly condemn the violent incidents and problems that international students have experienced in Australia in recent times,” Ms Gillard told reporters.
“There is no tolerance for violence, no tolerance at all for any of the things we’ve seen happen, particularly in Victoria and NSW, in recent days. “
“We are going to do everything we can to send a message to international students that they are welcome here,” she said.
The new International Student Taskforce will develop strategies to support the welfare of international students. It will work with the Prime Minister’s special taskforce set up last week to co-ordinate Australia’s response to the violence against Indian students.
In a joint communique the ministers agreed there was a need to “address quickly any issues of the quality of education and training providers in their jurisdiction.”
“Ministers have agreed that to achieve this, targeted audits of providers will be undertaken as a matter of priority.”
Ms Gillard will also fast-track a planned review of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act to tighten regulatory provisions. The review will now start in 2009-10.

Indian student attacked in Melbourne

A 24-year-old Indian student from Gujarat was attacked by a group of men here, the latest in a spate of racial assaults targeting the community members in Australia.
Hardik Bipinbhai Patel, who hails from Surat, was attacked by three people while he was about to enter his car here last night.
Patel, who is pursuing a course in commercial cookery at the Melbourne University, said two people came in front of him while he was about to enter his car and punched him on his face.
“Then someone from my back side hit on my head and I fell unconscious. When I woke up I was found far away from the area and an elderly man helped me to reach hospital,” Patel, who suffered face injuries in the assault, told PTI.
He said the attackers also looted his mobile, wallet and car keys and that they looked like drug addicts.
Patel, who was admitted to a hospital yesterday, was discharged today and is doing well.
The attack comes after Indian students in Melbourne and Sydney have held series of rallies over violent attacks and repeated calls for an inquiry into racial attacks against them.
