BIS Raid on Surat Firm Leads to Seizure of 112 Electronic Devices

Surat: A team of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a raid at M/s Phoenix Infotech located in Sachin SIDC after receiving information regarding the sale of electronic products without valid BIS registration.

During the raid, BIS officials seized 112 electronic products, including wireless earbuds, wireless earphones, power banks, and speakers, which were allegedly being stored and offered for sale without the mandatory BIS registration and certification requirements. The products were found bearing BIS markings but were not compliant with the prescribed registration norms.

Under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012, issued by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on September 7, 2012, it is mandatory for such products to carry a valid Registration Number under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) along with the BIS Standard Mark. Manufacturers, importers, and sellers are prohibited from manufacturing, selling, or stocking these products without the required BIS registration.

Violation of these provisions attracts legal action under Section 17 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. The offense is punishable with imprisonment of up to two years, a fine of not less than ₹2 lakh, or both.

According to BIS, some manufacturers attempt to market electronic products without obtaining the mandatory BIS Registration Mark and Registration Number in order to maximize profits. To protect consumers and prevent the circulation of non-compliant products, the Bureau conducts enforcement drives and raids from time to time. DeshGujarat
