A group of Muslims led by Congress leader Badaruddin Sheikh is agitating for renaming of BRTS bus-stand in Ahmedabad’s Shah Alam area.
The Muslims want to name a new BRTS bus-stand in their area as ‘Pir Kamal Mosque Bus-Stand’ replacing the existing name ‘Swaminarayan College Bus-Stand.’
After they tried to pelt stones on the glass-made BRTS bus-stand couple of days before, the local authority glued newspapers over the sign board: ‘Swaminarayan College Bus-Stand’, and completely concealed it. Therefore the bus-stand as of now is name-less, and Muslims have stopped their agitation.
The Muslims say that earlier there was an AMTS(local bus) bus-stand here, which was named as ‘Pir Kamal Mosque Bus-Stand’. Therefore new BRTS bus-stand that has come up nearby should also be named accordingly.
The authority however believes that this is new BRTS bus-stand, not belonging to AMTS and therefore there is no question of replacing the name. The authority also believes that the BRTS stop is likely to get more commuters from Swaminarayan College which is located nearby, therefore its name ‘Swaminarayan College Bus-Stand’ is appropriate and one should not succumb to agitation of few people who are politically motivated.
Danilimda-Shah Alam has 50-50% population of Hindus and Muslims. This area was earlier cornered, polluted and undeveloped part of the city that has now got a new life after inauguration of new BRTS rout passing from here connecting West Ahmedabad and Kankaria-Maninagar area.
