The Lajpor jail near Surat is the first central jail of Gujarat that has been constructed after India’s independence. This jail will be Gujarat’s first and India’s second jail to have a play ground. Presently only Tihar jail of Delhi has play ground for the prisoners. It is all possible that the inmates of this jail will be able to learn hockey, cricket and football.
According to the jail I.G, P.C Thakur there is a difference between the jails that were built in the British Era and the ones that are built now. The jails that are built now are made by keeping the human needs in mind. The Lajpor jail has a bigger cricket ground than that of Tihar jail. Apart from cricket, prisoners can play football and hockey. Also a nursery has been set up for women who come with children. Facilities like a clinic and a meditation centre are also given to the female prisoners. Apart from this, special care has been taken for developing reading habits in the inmates. There were originally 22,000 books in state jails which have now increased to 60,000 books under the ‘Vanche Gujarat’ programme.
