Sonia Gandhi’s father was fascist soldier, says Congress mouthpiece

Mumbai

Articles in Congress party’s mouthpiece today criticised Jawaharlal Nehru’s policy on Kashmir issue and mentioned that Sonia Gandhi’s father was a fascist soldier.

A write-up in the Mumbai unit’s journal, coinciding with the party’s 131st foundation day, blamed Jawaharlal Nehru for “the state of affairs in Kashmir, China and Tibet” even as another write-up made controversial remarks on party chief Sonia Gandhi.

Both these articles, which do not bear the name of the writer, have been published in this month’s issue of ‘Congress Darshan’ Hindi edition as a tribute to the country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabbhai Patel on his death anniversary on December 15.

The article states that Nehru should have listened to Patel’s views on international affairs and that the relationship between the two leaders remained strained. Despite Patel getting the post of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, the relations between the two leaders remained strained, and both had threatened to resign time and again. If Nehru had embraced Patel’s foresight, many problems in international affairs would not have arisen.

The article cites a letter that Patel purportedly wrote in 1950 to caution Nehru against China’s policy towards Tibet and in which “Patel described China as unfaithful, and a future enemy of India.”

“Had Patel been heard (by Nehru) then, the problems of Kashmir, China, Tibet and Nepal wouldn’t have existed now. Patel opposed Nehru’s move of taking the Kashmir issue to the UNO,” stated the article, adding, “Nehru did not agree with Patel’s views on Nepal.”

Another article, which focuses on the Congress President, describes her early life in great detail, including her “ambition to become an airhostess”, as well as mention that her father was a member of the Italian forces that lost to the Russians in the World War.

“Sonia Gandhi’s father Stephano Maino was a former fascist soldier,” it alleged.

The write-up also describes how Sonia quickly rose to the position of party president.

“Sonia Gandhi registered as a primary member of the Congress in 1997 and became the party s president in 62 days.

She also made an unsuccessful attempt to form a government,” the article says.

Damage Control exercise on

Mumbai Regional Congress Committee chief and editor of the journal Sanjay Nirupam said he is not involved in the day-to-day functioning of the magazine and was unaware of the articles.

“I admit the mistake. Inquiry will be initiated against the editorial department which committed the mistake. We will take measures that such a mistake is not repeated,” Nirupam said.

In Delhi, Congress leaders Salman Khurshid and Raj Babbar said that it should be seriously looked into.

“If something like this has come out in the Congress article, then AICC will take it up,” Khurshid said.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said that it was clear that the writer was not aware of history and had no knowledge of the conditions under which Nehru had become the first Prime Minister and the challenges he faced like eradicating poverty.

Nirupam also said he was not aware who penned these write-ups.

“I do not agree with the article. It seems to have been sourced, but I don’t know who the writer (s) is,” Nirupam, who in his earlier stint with Shiv Sena edited Hindi newspaper ‘Dopahar Ka Saamana’, said, adding that corrective measures would be taken.

Meanwhile, BJP leader and Union Minister Jitender Singh said such remarks about Nehru’s policy have been made earlier also and not just by BJP.

“Many of Nehru’s close friends have written books mentioning that the course of events in Jammu and Kashmir would have been different had it been left to the then home minister (Patel),” he said.- With inputs from PTI

BJP reacts:

BJP secretary Shrikant Sharma questioned the sacking of the magazine’s content editor Sudhir Joshi, saying it showed the party’s “intolerance against truth” as most of what had appeared was a “matter of fact”.

Javadekar quoted from the write-up, which criticised Nehru’s Kashmir and China policies, while lavishing praise on Patel, as he sought to further embarrass Congress.

“Congress mouthpiece would never write about Patel. And now when it has written, it has written only truth,” he said, claiming that leaders outside Nehru-Gandhi family like P V Narasimha Rao, Lal Bahadur Shastri besides Patel never got “justice” from it, a party of “one family”.

Haryana minister attacks Nehru
Chandigarh

As BJP relished the articles of Congress mouthpiece, Haryana’s outspoken Minister Anil Vij today latched on to the opportunity to attack Jawaharlal Nehru, saying that the first prime minister was the “founder of many problems” the country was facing.

Vij made a series of tweets as BJP gloated over Congress’ embarrassment following publication of articles critical of Nehru and Sonia Gandhi in its mouthpiece.

“True, Jawaharlal Nehru was the founder of many problems India is facing today,” Vij, Minister in the Manohar Lal Khattar government, wrote in his tweet today.

In another tweet, Vij alleged that Nehru had problem in accepting the marriage of his daughter Indira to Feroze over the latter’s name.

Notably, this is not the first time when the five-time BJP MLA from Ambala Cantt has stoked controversy as in the past too he has often attacked the Nehru-Gandhi family.

In an embarrassment to Congress, articles in its mouthpiece today criticised Nehru’s policy on Kashmir issue and alleged Sonia Gandhi’s father was a “fascist soldier”, leaving the party squirming over the controversy on its Foundation Day.

In his recent tweets, Vij had triggered a row by saying that “all Congress leaders have DNA for wrongdoings”.

Vij had taken the dig at Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for her comment that she was not scared of anyone as she was the daughter-in-law of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

“Everyone knows that Congress leaders are not afraid of doing wrong things. The DNA of all of you (Congress people) is the same,” Vij had tweeted.

The Health minister in the BJP government, who is known to even take on his own government at times, has in the past also attacked Indira Gandhi.

“This is the same Indira Gandhi who crushed all democratic rights to impose Emergency. Her soul is still alive among all Congress leaders,” he had earlier tweeted.
