Gujarat Among Top States as PNG Expansion Gains Pace Amid West Asia Crisis

Surat: Gujarat has emerged as one of the leading states in the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections, as the Centre accelerates efforts to reduce dependence on LPG cylinders amid the ongoing West Asia crisis.

Along with Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana, Gujarat has recorded a significant rise in both new PNG registrations and the reactivation of dormant connections since March. The nationwide drive aims to boost piped gas supply to households and ease pressure on LPG distribution.

Data shows that out of more than 5.2 lakh new PNG registrations, Gujarat accounted for around 76,000 connections, placing it among the top contributors after Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, a large number of inactive connections have also been revived across states as part of the initiative.

According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, India had over 1.6 crore domestic PNG connections as of January 31 this year, of which slightly more than one crore were active. The number of commercial and industrial PNG consumers stood at 48,568 and 21,512, respectively, across 307 geographical areas.

The regulator has directed gas companies to fast-track the rollout of domestic PNG connections in 110 geographical areas and has extended the nationwide expansion campaign, launched on January 1, until June 30 to maintain momentum.

Authorities are also working closely with district administrations in regions with fewer than 10,000 connections to improve infrastructure and speed up approvals for network expansion. To support the transition, the Centre has offered states and Union Territories an additional 10% allocation of commercial LPG, linked to reforms promoting a shift towards PNG.

Officials said a streamlined, time-bound framework has been put in place to facilitate pipeline laying and expansion, addressing key bottlenecks such as land access and regulatory clearances. DeshGujarat
