Gujarat Governor to Avoid Air Travel, Reduce Cars in Convoy
May 12, 2026
Gandhinagar: Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat on Tuesday announced a series of measures aimed at fuel conservation and economic discipline, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for “Economic Self-Defense”.
As part of the measures, the Governor announced that he would avoid helicopter and air travel for all programmes within Gujarat until the petroleum situation in the country normalises. Instead, he said he would prefer travelling by train, state transport buses and other forms of public transport.
He also instructed officials to minimise the use of the Governor’s Z Plus security convoy wherever possible in an effort to reduce fuel consumption.
The Governor further directed Vice Chancellors of all universities in Gujarat to observe at least one day every week as a “Combustion Engine Free” day on campuses. He suggested that teachers and students should prioritise bicycles, electric vehicles and public transport over petrol and diesel vehicles.
In addition, Acharya Devvrat urged government officers and employees to avoid unnecessary use of official vehicles and make all possible efforts to conserve fuel.
Addressing officers and employees at Lok Bhavan, the Governor said the initiatives were inspired by the Prime Minister’s seven-point appeal made during his address in Hyderabad on May 10, 2026. The meeting was attended by Lok Bhavan Principal Secretary Ashok Sharma, Home Director A.K. Joshi, ADC Shubham Kumar and other officials.
