Gujarat Leads India in Renewable Energy with 50.38 GW Installed Capacity, Targets 105 GW by 2030
July 09, 2026
Gandhinagar: Global Energy Independence Day, observed every year on July 10, highlights the global commitment to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and building a cleaner, more sustainable future. Gujarat continues to lead India’s clean energy transition, driven by rapid growth in wind, solar and rooftop solar capacity, backed by sustained policy support and large-scale adoption.
Gujarat is the country’s largest contributor to renewable energy, with a cumulative installed capacity of 50.386 GW, accounting for 17.82% of India’s total renewable energy capacity. The state ranks first in total installed renewable energy capacity (50.386 GW), first in installed wind power capacity (15,850.56 MW), second in installed solar power capacity (32,302.7 MW), and first in rooftop solar installations, with over 13 lakh rooftop systems generating 7,408.10 MW.
Gujarat Leads in Solar Power
As of May 2026, Gujarat’s installed solar power capacity stood at 32,302.7 MW, comprising 23,259.27 MW from ground-mounted projects, 7,408.10 MW from rooftop solar, 1,434.66 MW from hybrid projects, and 200.48 MW from off-grid systems, including PM KUSUM.
The rooftop solar capacity includes 2,079.31 MW under Surya Gujarat, 2,553.65 MW under PM Surya Ghar Yojana, and 2,775.14 MW from other installations. Major solar parks include Charanka (749 MW), Radhanesda (700 MW) and Dholera (300 MW).
The Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Kutch, planned with a capacity of 37.35 GW, had achieved 15.54 GW as of May 2026, making it the world’s largest renewable energy park. Gujarat has also crossed 13 lakh rooftop solar installations, generating 7,408.10 MW across residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Since 2016, the state has promoted residential rooftop solar through incentives, later complemented by the PM Surya Ghar scheme, contributing more than 21% of India’s total rooftop solar installations.
In the agriculture sector, 22,792 standalone off-grid solar water pumps with a capacity of 162.62 MW have been installed under PM KUSUM Component B as of May 2026.
Gujarat Tops Wind Power Capacity
Gujarat has remained at the forefront of India’s wind energy sector since introducing the country’s first Wind Power Policy. As of May 2026, the state’s installed wind power capacity stood at 15,850.56 MW, with Kutch contributing 8,191.42 MW.
Other major wind power districts include Jamnagar (1,986.15 MW), Devbhumi Dwarka (1,343.24 MW), Amreli (992.90 MW), Rajkot (869.60 MW), Bhavnagar (626.20 MW), Morbi (612.10 MW), Surendranagar (500.60 MW) and Patan (208.20 MW).
The state has also commissioned 2,838.07 MW of wind-solar hybrid projects under the 2018 Hybrid Policy and the Gujarat RE Policy 2023. More than 80% of wind turbines have been installed on government-allotted land, supported by strong transmission and evacuation infrastructure.
Based on the state’s installed renewable energy capacity, an estimated 2.37 lakh direct and indirect jobs have been created. The Gujarat government has also streamlined grid connectivity through the Akshay Urja Setu online portal, improving ease of doing business and enabling faster project implementation. Under the net metering framework, Gujarat has installed over 7.40 GW of rooftop solar capacity, making it the national leader in the segment.
Strong Policy Framework Driving Growth
Gujarat’s renewable energy expansion has been supported by a series of progressive policies. Beginning with the country’s first Wind Power Policy in 1993, the state introduced Solar Power Policies in 2009, 2015 and 2021, the Waste-to-Energy and Small Hydel Policies (2016), and the Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy (2018).
The updated Waste-to-Energy Policy (2022) and the Gujarat Integrated Renewable Energy Policy-2025, effective from December 24, 2025, to December 31, 2030, provide a unified framework for solar, wind, hybrid, distributed renewable energy projects and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The policy removes capacity restrictions, covers all project categories, defines tariffs, grid charges, energy accounting, cross-subsidy and banking charges, and introduces the DREBP scheme. It also promotes on-demand grid connectivity, flexible commissioning timelines, repowering of ageing wind projects, battery storage integration, private investment, renewable energy manufacturing, recycling, digital facilitation through the Akshay Urja Setu portal, group and virtual net metering, rooftop and agricultural solar, circular economy initiatives, and green jobs.
Gujarat’s Renewable Energy Roadmap
Gujarat continues to expand its renewable energy footprint with several projects under implementation. As of May 2026, 1,531 projects were under development, including 1,320 solar projects (3.377 GW), 115 wind projects (3.913 GW) and 96 hybrid projects (4.869 GW), taking the total pipeline capacity to 12.159 GW.
At RE-INVEST 2024 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat set a target of achieving 105 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, contributing 20% to India’s national goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity. DeshGujarat
