Blast at Firecracker Factory in Ahmedabad; 8 Killed and Several Injured

Ahmedabad: A major fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at an open plot and shed used for firecracker manufacturing and processing in Mahmudpura, near Ramol in Ahmedabad. Eight people lost their lives in the incident, and 10 others were injured.

According to preliminary information, teams from the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the incident. The fire has since been brought completely under control, and cooling operations are currently underway.

The fire department said the incident occurred at a firecracker manufacturing and processing unit located opposite Talent School in the Mahmudpura area on the Ramol–Gatrad Road. Personnel from the nearby Rapid Action Force (RAF) camp were among the first responders and immediately joined the rescue operation. Several bodies were recovered from the site, while the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

For the rescue and firefighting operation, the fire department deployed one mini fighter, two 20-KL water bowsers, two Bolero Rapid Intervention Vehicles (RIVs), and one ambulance. Firefighters worked continuously to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to nearby areas.

The operation was supervised by the Chief Fire Officer and Additional Chief Fire Officers. The team at the site included one Chief Fire Officer, two Additional Chief Fire Officers, one Deputy Chief Fire Officer, one Divisional Fire Officer, one Station Fire Officer, and one Sub Officer, who coordinated the rescue and firefighting efforts.

According to the fire department, the blaze is now fully under control and cooling operations are continuing. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained and is under investigation. Officials said more details regarding the cause of the incident will be released after the inquiry is completed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the fireworks factory mishap in Ahmedabad, saying he was “extremely saddened” by the incident. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured, adding that the local administration was providing all possible assistance to the affected.

The Prime Minister also announced an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 for each injured person. Separately, the Gujarat government announced financial assistance of Rs. 4 lakh to the family of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 to each injured person.

Police said the firecracker factory was allegedly being operated illegally. According to JCP Jaipal Singh Rathod, the unit was being run by Mehul Dodiya, whose licence to operate the firecracker factory had already been cancelled. Despite the cancellation, the factory continued to function, he said.

Authorities have recovered eight bodies from the site. The injured have been shifted for treatment, while the exact cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained.

Ramol police have launched an investigation and are expected to register a case under the Explosives Act and other relevant provisions of the law. Further investigation is underway. DeshGujarat
