Yes, Ahmedabad is changing and it is changing at so many fronts very fast. In first episode of this series ‘ Ahmedabad is changing’, there is a talk about how malls, supermarkets, hypermarkets and chains of retail stores altogether are changing Ahmedabad city and the people of Ahmedabad. No weekly holiday please: Surat chamber of commerce urged government

Surat, DeshGujarat

Surat based smalltime shop owners now want to work 24×7. They have urged government of Gujarat to do necessary change in ‘Gumasta dhara’ law which has provision to maintain at least one weekly holiday compulsory for shop owners.

South Gujarat chamber of commerce has asked state government that in the era of competition when malls and superstores work for all the days, why small businessmen, shop owners falling under ‘Gumasta dhara’ low should not be allowed to work in a same way? Malls and superstores earn maximum amount of customers and income in weekends when small shops are closed. Malls and superstores even work on national holidays like 26th January and 15th August which are declared as mandatory closure days by government. Government should allow small shops also to work for all the days.

enjoyed this, waiting for next episode. goodluck.

  2. shefali Says:

we hear here that ahmedabad is changing but never got the picture in such detail. thanks for this episode.

  3. jigar Says:

Last phase of this episode is worth. Consumrism is something which is less discussed and it is realy worth discussing instead. enjoyed.

  4. Drushti Says:

Very burning issue…amdavadis please wake up!!! evu nathi laagtu ke amdavad ne badlya vina amdavad ma je che ene and amdavad khud je che ene conserve-preserve karvu joie….aa badha malls ni bheed ma kyak bheedj rahe ne amdavad khovai na jaay…do we really WANT this?? Do we really NEED this?? I mean what we need is progress and not saturation…innovations not repetations….preserve, innovate textile capital and dont convert it into “mall” or consumerism capital…..
Reliance can do much better than wasting energy over malls…and today reliance is considered such a company that others could follow it…reliance doesnt need to jump into the mall-rush…Dint expect that from reliance…..
finally for amdavadis, watch out for long term burning effects rather than stupidly enjoying short term sparkles..

  5. Krunal Says:

Shruti..I dont agree with you. Everyone needs change then why not amdavadis..? I think you are already out of india and would like to see ahmedabad in its original form but then ppl in ahmedabad are tired of ‘original’ ahmedabad. and they need change.

and I agree with Japan. this is not ‘development’..Ahmedabad as well as Gujarat both are loosing against states in south when it comes to Informaton Technology.

  6. ankita Says:

Krunalbhai, you are right but there is atleast somethng to think in what Drushti is saying. Ahmedabad is becoming a market. Consumrism is flooding and where is income generation ? The point japan has righly raised in this episode is i thinkm Ahmedabad is changing but Amdavais should not, but they are changing.

  7. s govindan raju Says:

    Hello, people at deshgujarat,

I am not gujarati and thus failed to listen and understood this gujarati episode but at the same time I can grasp what is it about, by reading comments and detail. There is more or less same situation in our cities in south india. can you please give here the write up of last phase which is admired so much in english text ? consumerism touches us all so please give it.

  8. DeshGujarat Says:

Mr. Raju, here are some of the thought provoking words, which are told in the last phase of this episode, they are known among the people who are giving a thought about consumerism. Though this is not 100 percent of last phase, I hope even this partial part will satisfy your curiosity.Last sentense of second paragraph is a quote from Robert graves.

    —————————————

“You work in a job you hate, to buy stuff that you don’t need, to impress
    people that you don’t like.”

    —————————————

“I can imagine it, therefore I want it. I want it, therefore I should have
it. Because I should have it, I need it. Because I need it, I deserve it.
Because I deserve it, I will do anything necessary to get it.”

You “can imagine it” because they will bombard your consciousness with its image
until you move to step two, “I want it…etc. ” This is one of the things
that allows people to surrender to consumerism. As a society we have gone
from self-sufficiency based on our internal common sense of reasonable
limits to the ridiculous goal of Keeping up with the Jones then to
stampeding for the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, or at least as far as
our credit limit allows us to go. When people have lost their authentic personal taste, they lose their personality and become the instruments of other peoples’ wills.

  9. amdavadi Says:

good episode. waiting for next part.

  10. Drushti Says:

Hey Krunal, you are right that everyone needs change and variety..afterall variety is the spice of life esp. for amdavadi population..agree…but dont u think that “spices” should not spoil that real “dish”…I mean amdavad did need something to break that monotonous market but not in such a wild manner…thats what I believe….I agree with Japan for the fact that due to such wild “development” there are more ways to spend than earn money..It is like there is demand because there is supply….and not the original way where there was supply because of demand!!! If not controlled then this will for sure disturb the whole economy system of amdavad.. I am not against the malls but what bothers me is this one-sided development which will be heavier on one side…To balance this balance, there should be same opportunities to earn as there are to spend. I hope now you understand what I meant….And afterall its about expressing your thoughts about the issue…

  11. dharmesh patel Says:

It’s good PODcast but actually it’s more useful for who those are liveing in ahmedabad now.

Last part is most useful and we all need to think about it.

MALL is the one of the bad fruite of globelization.
ONLY people are going to MALL bcos it is new and attrective but after some time people may realize that this is not for us then tey will stop to going there.

I have to give one example…….in Ahmedabad one time POOL TABLE are start so speedy and attract too much people( it start bcos copy from foreign culture) some time you had to wait for play….but then what happen which speed it start that speed it close also….bcos every body know that is nothing but our money wasting machine and we don’t need that.

What is actual MALL effect in NorthAmerica.???
MALL are buying all product manily form the China (and other countries) and selling at very cheap price…so all people are attrect to MALL but in beck side NorthAmerica’s Domestic Product is lossing there market in their own country and layoff to employee and start to close or outscource the work.

so the same coustomer now in which postion???did you think.
Customer is has no Job , Pocket is empty and not able to but the even cheap product of the MALL.
BUT MALL is still selling how????
By marketing…and selling on credit card.
like take product now and don’t pay until 15 months or etc….so you one again cought in their Tricks.

final effect is that you have no job and your are’s manufacturing is closing down and no hope for getting job in one year after one year you have to pay or credit card or product bill other wise you become bankcroupt.

this story is simmiler of our old Textile story…..now a days it is repeating with the RETAIL business….

MALL tricks. They are selling POTATO at Rs 3 or even less ..then their own cost to just attrect the coustomer and if you once go to MALL for 10kg POTATO for 30 kgs then it is sure that you will buy other things whihc are on disply as sale even if they are not useful to you.
so for Rs 30 you put Rs 300 overe there……
this is the marketing Stretergies that is not understand by the common people……….with common eyes….

I write too much but last thing………..
BUY your local PRODUCT form your LOCAL man and keep running cities ECONOMY for long time………

  12. Ritesh Says:

Bahu j mastin… maja padi gai .. update karta rehjo …

  13. DeshGujarat Says:

    Reffering to Ritesh’s comment.

There are three new episodes every week. That is about update. It’s great that you enjoyed the episode. Thanks for comment.

  14. PATEL KRUNAL .M. Says:

Bahu j maza ave che.he is a very funy episode.

  15. CK gandhi Says:

Interesting episode and debate too but consumerism can be good too. See, because of consumerism, goods rotate faster and therefore people earn more because of consumption and production cycle becoming more frequent. People who are directly connected to business, and people who are no directly connected all earn.

the most notable part of this episode is what japan has said about his two friends. One says that he feel how poor he is when he is in a mall seeing 2000 rs. shirt and other says that when he see such a costly shirt he is determine to earn more. This is amazing part and it tells negative and positive, both ways you can think about consumerism.

  16. Dhaval Jani Says:

In Ahmedabad, most money comes from FII. Means stock market is the strongest reason to have thick pocket in Ahmedabad. Stock market is a strongest sector. It’s a generator for not just Ahmedabad and Bombay but for all India. FDI also increases day by day but the contribution to boost the economy lays in FII. Overseas takeovers by domestic local companies and engineering outsourcing boost the profit of the companies and so the Sensex. TATA. INFOSYS, RELIANCE etc giants made theie strongest presence abroad. Ahemdabadis like to have easy and frequent money. They are not technosavvy but real investors. It is in the blood that gujaratis like us can’t even stop playing in stock market even in New York and Toronto Stock exchange. The dice turns right this time for gujaratis all across the world. NRI investment flows in real estate is also second most important reason to boost the prices in the market. Over all the future of India looks bright but Gujarat may attrack investments in Port sector, diamonds, textiles, engineering processing works. Gujarat still have the capacity to become engineering hub and outsourcing centre. I request to chamber of commerce to actively participate in the talk and to represent the most concrete projects to Gujarat Govt. So far Mr. Narendra Modi is trying his best and let the japanese companies start theie export units at Mundra and Adani ports.
Ahmedabad can never die. It’s always full of spirit. I would say one thing that ahmedabadis always have money to spend and money to buy even jet in the world. Amdavadi kora naa hoy dost. I m proud of being ahmedabadi and I also agree with Deshgujarat’s comment to have more investment in manufacturing sector instead of service sector. But as long as the cash flows come, nothing much to worry. Ahmedabad will see the most amazing sunshine after decades again, the most powerful, the most surprised. Also rajkot is being developed as engineering and technical service hub and surat is for textiles and diamond and jewellery market.
    Thanks, Jai jai garvi gujarat.

  17. Dhaval Jani Says:

The one thing i could always praise myself about is to make a name ” made in india” in canadian market by launching made in india jewellery studded with real diamonds in canadian super stores like costco and zellers. A decade ago noone even could imagine such thing. Now a days “made in india” is shining everywhere. So as “made in gujarat”. Our jewellery is being casted and polished by Rajkot karigars and diamonds are being studded near Navsari. All the jobworks give approximately 200 workers employment. I wish to increase this quota in next year. Made in Gujarat jewellery so far is doing excellent. Gujarat is pretty mysterious place where lions are moving freely upto the coast of somnath and veraval. Gujarat is a power centre where Ambaji, Mahakaliji and Bahucharaji, three Shaktipithas are situated on the skirts of Gujarat. Do you have any doubt about being powerful of gujarati communities everywhere?

    Thanks

    Jani

  18. Akshay Says:

Whatever it is, I love these malls…because they provide ease in buying stuff with lots of varieties.

  19. Mihir Says:

Maja padi gai…. 20. ankita Says:

That’s true Mihir, bargaining ni pan ek majaa hati pan aajkaal ni new generation aane zanzat maane chhe a pan ek virtue chhe.

  21. Drushti Says:

I agree with you ankita..I never understood why bargaining is fun??!!To me its the most embarrasing part of shopping and I always get into debate with my mother!! I mean if you really need the thing, buy it or else leave it!! Thats my opinion!!

  22. confused patel Says:

  23. NAMAN Says:

I AGREE WITH NARENDRA MODI WHO IS CHANGING GUJARAT AND THOUGHTS OF GUJARATI. THIS ALL HAPPENS ON HARD WORK OF NARENDRA MODI.

  24. Jigar Says:

    Hey buddy,

you have started something new !

appreciate your try, i am also amdavadi but missing all those things, because working at bangalore, microsoft !!

I support development of shopping mall, i have done good research on wal-mart chain. But these days, there is no need to spend one full day for shopping things that we can just get in 2 hours from malls. My point is, its good because it saves time and doesn’t even cost so much more.

anyways, being software-IT guy, let me know if you need any help in technology side, i would be glad to help you in your noble cause.

  25. Shashikant Ganatra Says:

    Sir,
It is good that Ahmedabad is changing but not only Ahmadabad is changing but whole of India changing. I am from Rajkot at USA. I have seen that Rajkot is also changing and now mall culture has started in Rajkot also. Why dont you show progress of Rajkot and all the cities of Gujarat.
However your submission and efforts are appciable Go on. Thanks
    Shashikant Ganatra

  26. Dave Says:

    Hey guys,

Malls are good, but they will not give credit like local kirana store gives, will not give advice on what to buy and what not, and also, no personal touch. So, there are specific advantages and disadvantages of all.

Its a hype created temporarily. I would buy from the palce where I get things at cheaper rates and lesser time.

    Hope it makes sense?

  27. sanjay Says:

    hi all,
I am very impressed by this audio..by d way,..i live in UK..and here i show the same things happened..what is right now happening in Ahmedabd,, here It already happened several years ago.. and because of it..i cant see no small shop for ready made garments, no glocery shops and no smal consumer electronics…All the shops are ..wht we call super markets..
There is big shopping centre called TESCo here….every city has about 3 to 4 TESCO..most of us go der to shop..and government could not do anything about it ..even after petition was filed by small shop owners..

  28. Gujarati Says:

I really admire your versatile sensitivity. But, sometimes, to align with “change”, you are harsh with the “old”…e.g. referring to the people in old clothes store as “magar” (crocodile). You cant be so disparaging to those people. Dont allow me to see a stigma in the form of human indignity on your personality n ur reasoning abilities.

Chal..hope to see more of ur better episodes.

  29. nilay trivedi Says:

hello desh gujarat, the points which u have discussed in this audio prog are definitely worth pondering over. but i still feel there would never b any oversupply of malls in ahmedabad cause amdavadis have always been ready to spend money shopping and recreating besides ahmedabad is india’s biggest centre of NRIs so now even they could gain access to some of the best shopping destinations in india n rest assured it would never affect the clothes vendors at law garden and various other places in the city as they are totally different. and pune which is 2/3rd of ahmedabad is having 21 malls coming up by 2008 and there is no danger of oversupply over there. ahmedabad at the moment has about 8 malls and the tally would be around 26 by 2009 so there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. we can easily accomodate more than 30 malls. enjoy the MALLS guys!!!

  30. kushan bhatt Says:

i m agree with you in unlike b’lore nd hy’bad,a’bad not getting highly salaried vacancis but the future is quite bright.in next 5 to 10 year only in IT field a’bad vl require 2.5lac highly qualified employees.only a’bad nd g’nagar vl hv 8 to 10 IT sez.nd i m damn sure that they vl contribute to carry on the mall culture.so u vl see boom in retail sector, service sector,IT sector, manufacturing sector with 2 sez, construction sector, etc for minimum next 10 to 15 year in a’bad nd in gujarat also.

  31. kushan bhatt Says:

    didn’t u study ,those pts which i tell u,b4 the episode.its okay man.but thanks a lot

  32. kushan bhatt Says:

anyone has any querries against my points then i can gv u more figs.but v should gv whole cradit to deshgujarat who is doin this grt work 4 a noble cause

  33. Dhananjay Says:

This is an excellent site. I have lived in Ahmedabad and Gujarat for over 21 years, and also lived across South and North India since the last 4-5 years. There is no other state in India like Gujarat.
Its a truly vibrant state which has become prosperous due to the enterprise, honesty and hard work of people in Gujarat, along with the continuous efforts of the Gujarat Government.

This website has done a great job of showcasing Gujarat’s achievements. But, I would also like this site to feature more about the progress and developments in rural and semi-urban areas of Gujarat.

    Regards,
    Dhananjay

  34. VIDYUT Says:

hello, As we are talking about malls, office buildigs, broad roads etc.
but for city that is not enough each and every corner should be clean and well
design by planner. As I have visited england were I have seen every site of corner
are well planned . Municipal corporation should have to take care of it.After comple.
