Ahmedabad is changing:Part 2(Cafes)

In this second part of the series ‘Ahmedabad is changing’ an episode about new cafe culture which has emerged across the city is presented. There are now at least 10 Café coffee day outlets and some 4 Barista cafés. Also, small players like TC’s , Lounge9 and Café upper crust have mushroomed. And for high end customers, there is Café Mocha on IIM road.
Young ones are fast picking up Café idea, and they usually meet at Cafés rather than at friends’ room or street corners which was usual earlier. Prize for single cup coffeé ranges from 30 Rs to 120 Rs and more. Paying hefty cost for a cup of coffee, most of the time what young Ahmedabadi gets back is not only coffee, but also superb environment to hang out with friend, professional or loved one for almost unlimited time.Reference and more related reading:Cafe Coffee Day(CCD) , Hookah culture,Ahmedabad , Bug in CCD on You tube , Cafes lure youngsters in colleges , Storm in a brewing mug: Macro view , Starbucks in India soon

When we two friends go to cafe and order coffee, it finishes in minutes and we always want to sit for the more time, so we order something else and then something else and after one and half hour(that is my usual spending)we end up everytime paying up more than 100 rs. This is what happens but where is the bloody option ?

These chains change your habit and you never know about it. You usualy don’t consume coffee but these people make you consuming coffee by opening outlet at the place near you and making an atmosphere where you will enjoy sitting and talking. In a new era , one has to be sure about his/her habits and choices because so much is bombarded by outside that no body is left.

The episode was very nicely written and spoken. You are very skillful and resourceful. You should be running your own FM.

cafe` culture, yet another addition to amdavadi lifestyle..
Japan, really Nice one and accurate..excellent observation.
As you said at the end, that the price you pay is not only for coffee but also for that fantastic, non disturbing service…ye, we all need that but at some point it is strange to me that we pay Others for OUR personal time!!!! We are getting closer to cafes, away from homestyle meets!! Although its a new concept for amdavad, amdavadi idea is the base for these cafes and that is, comfort comes prior to money! life to jalsaa valij hovi joiene- idea!!! No matter how much you charge me, give me my own space…and there is nothing wrong in it as far as WE pay and not our parents!!
One thing I realised from these episodes that amdavad indeed is changing and the standard of living is higher than last decade..Oh and I never noticed before that there is 12% tax !!!!! thats too much!!
November 22nd, 2006 at 4:39 am
… I really appreciate your speech…The way you speak and exhibit the minor point behind the talk… Sitting here in USA and listening to this wonderful story and know about Amdavad is really exciting…I think with the pocket money that I was getting in my time, I will not be able to sustain even one day now…This question really made me nervous as I am planning to come to Ahmedabad in this December…Now I can really understand why my brother needs more money because now i can see the extravegant reason to spen money… Anywyas I can not wait to be back to my town…Will be really exciting..
And this is really good start to keep some people away from Amdavad updated about the happenings in Ahmedabad…. REally liked this site…

thats true Drushti, 12.5% tx is too much and it’s on almost every kind of bill here even telephon bill.
November 22nd, 2006 at 8:04 am
Absolutely, Mihir…I was thinking almost the same thing..It is not like “old” times that ok we can compare dollars and rupees and then say that oh ok we can afford that in rupees…the market and the price both are almost same as US. Interesting thing is, India is still a “poor” country!!! Is it ? whtever, but its rising rapidly!!
November 22nd, 2006 at 12:23 pm
Drushti, India is poor when we compare with america and other western counties. Richer when we compare with African and other south asian countries. If we think indipendently, India is interesting mixture of a classes, poor and rich, rural and urban, Gujaratis and Keralits, Hindus and world’s second biggest population of musliks etc. we can not say this is India and that is not, or that is India and this is not. India is interesting.
November 22nd, 2006 at 6:49 pm
CK Gandhi,
Oh ofcourse India is interesting…and to me, India is the best..no matter poor or rich…and thats why I have quoted the word poor…I meant that to the world India is still “poor” in many aspects but then they fail to realize its potential to turn the table ! There is no place like India..amdavad is the best..

Hi,
I really deeply admire the idea of heralding Ahmedabad’s advent into modern arena. Please continue doing the good job you have already done. Please let me/us know if you need any help.

but there is one thing to tell. I still couldn’t ignore those famous kitlis of ahmedabad. Sitting on the “mudas” at the kitlis and having “ginger tea” with “muska ban” is a paradise experience for me.
I don’t want that much change. Cafes are quite good but “chay ki kitli” is forever. That’s pretty unique kind of experience dear. I would say we can have both fun in ahmedabad. Let the kitlis stay.
I would still like to have one in canada. Cafes are everywhere and in every part of the world. But kitlis you could only find in Ahmedabad. Ask people who left india behind. Ask us what are we missing. Ahmedabad is getting rapid changes but oldies still must be there to make us realize real ahmedabad once we left.

Absolutely Dhavalbhai…a maska bun and cha; cha ni kitli a dosto saathe gappa ne masti..sometimes it seems that that was the life….now its all routine…But then again Japan’s chatt-patii chit chat spices it up!

As usual nice observations again. You rock man. As others have said, its fun to listen to you and get to know about all latest happenings about Ahmedabad here in USA.
and on a completely different note, I see people complaining about 12.5% tax. Guyz, we pay around 6-10% tax in USA on top of 30-35% income tax(federal +state) and still we dont complain. now for “poor” country like ours where people use millions of ways to save on income tax, this is a sure shot way for government to raise money.
November 26th, 2006 at 5:03 am
Krunal is correct but in everything there should not be a tax. Like in cafe you spend high end time so tax is good but in telephone bill, it’s not proper because telephone is now daily use thing.

good job mate. Reallly enjoyed listening your podcasts, and would like to hear more of them in coming days. Liked the way you analyzed Barista’s logic behind not serving water, and the balanced analysis of Indian – Western cultural fusion.
On a side note, I went to Mumbai more than a decade back, and had Pizza in Taj for Rs. 450, and I was so surprised that I must have told atleast 100 friends and others about this. It just go refreshed while hearing your comment on your Mumbai trip. So, I guess we both are in same boat
Anyway, keep up the good work.
